Europe

Food. Everyone likes it. Today we have food everywhere. For example in supermarkets, restaurants or snack booths. But has that always been the case? In the following text I show you the development of the eating culture and typical eating habits of Europe.

First of all I want to tell you something about the eating culture of the middle ages. In the middle ages people were selfprovider. They ate what their surroundings give them. The people grew their own food. One of the main foods were peas and the horse's bean. Another staple food was grain. They cooked porridge and baked bread with it. The people ate less vegetables because they can't grew  it easily. Typical animals they kept and ate were cattle, pig, sheep, goat, horse and poultry. Also they hunted wild animals and caught fishes.

Today we have higher expectations of our food. It should be delicious and healthy and still look appetizing and fill you up. We eat more meat, less potatoes but noodles. Also we eat more fruits and vegetables then before because we can transport it around the world easier.

Now let's talk about the eating habits in Europe today. Generally we can distinguish between north and south Europe. In the northern countries, food is usually hearty while in the southern countries the food is usually sweet. You can already see it at the breakfast. In the North people eat ham, cheese, eggs, bread or in some countries like England also sausages. In the South people eat at breakfast sweet pastries with a sweet spread like croissants with jam. Throughout European people drink much coffee.

In the afternoon, the English “tea time” prevailed. In German it means “Kaffeekränzchen”. In many European countries you eat  cake, cookies or some sweets at this time. Also people drink coffee or a cup of tea.

The dinner have a high status in Europe. Most comes then the whole family together. In northern countries it begins approximately from 6 pm and in southern countries from 8 pm. If the day has started so sweetly in southern countries, it ends very hearty. Mostly you eat with family, friends and acquaintances together.

I hope you enjoyed my short text about the eating culture in Europe and you are smarter than before!
