Eating culture of South America and nutritional situation

The nutritional situation of poor people in South America:

South America is the fourth largest continent of the world with a surface of almost 18 million square kilometers but it also has 422 million people living there. South America's countries have almost the largest population growth in the world and it seems that many people living in developing countries do not have enough food to live, because they were poor.

My blog post will show you facts about malnutrition issues in South America in terms of population growth, food production, health and nutrition.

First of all I like to give you some facts about this continent.
The estimated population of South America in 2019 is 422.5 million inhabitants. The annual population growth of the continent is one of the highest in the world.
The highest population growth in South America is in Ecuador at 1.5%, followed by
Colombia and Brazil each with 0.8%. The lowest population growth in South America is in Chile (0.7%), Argentina (0.6%) and Uruguay (0.4%).

More than 800 million people are starving, 2 billion suffer from malnutrition.
While there is enough food for everyone on Earth, food is distributed unevenly, so many children in developing countries are starving. 1.5 - 6.4% of the causes of death of all people in South American countries are due to malnutrition. In Brazil, undernutrition declined between 1960 and 1970 from 68.3% to 46% between 1970 and 1980.

Colombia and Venezuela are showing slight changes, while Chile is increasing. It has been shown that the food supply in South America between 1965 and 1974 led to an increase in protein consumption.

Malnutrition is still one of the most prevalent health problems in South America, especially among young children.

But how does overpopulation and poverty change the eating habits of South Americans?

Food production has not kept up with population growth in several countries. Brazil and Venezuela are the two South American countries with the largest food production. In Chile and Ecuador, food production per person has declined.

A recent World Health Organization (WHO) study indicated that in absolute numbers, more than 200 million South Americans are now considered overweight.

In 2011, the world's population exceeded seven billion people. By the year 2050 we will even be nine billion.
Although there is theoretically enough food for all people worldwide, it is not available to all people equally. On the one hand, around 800 million people worldwide are suffering from hunger. On the other hand, another billion people suffer from a lack of vitamins and minerals.

I think we could solve these problems by distributing the food on the world equally to all people. If nothing is done about the policy, there will be massive hunger problems. In addition to that, climate change will increase, so that in 2050 I think it will be a global problem for the next generation.
We already have to solve this Problem today and not if it is already too late.

I hope my research results could help you :)

  1. Hello Malte! I´ve read your post and I like the most part of it.
The facts you gave strengthened your opinion pretty well!
You also gave interesting information of malnutrition, I didn´t know before. Furthermore I liked your pictures you used for the post.

I would like to know some ideas of you, how you would fix the problems you mentioned in your text. Maybe you are able give some own estimations what would happen, if the food is divided equally.
But all in all i think that you did a great job writing the post :)

  2. Hey Malte!
At first I like the idea of writing about each continent to show the diversity of food culture. Also to show the big popularity and the malnutrition. Sadly this is the truth. People in Europe have so much food that we are throwing “old” ones into waste, and on the other side of the world people need it so much but they have to drink toxic water. I feel sorry for them. In the future I will take a look at my food and think about throwing dishes away. Cause of you I know that the popularity is growing in some countries so fast.
Your structure is quite clear and your diagrams shows that you are well informed. But there are so many numbers, it’s a little bit hard to follow your text because I skipped the sentence with the issues. I would help if you wrote less of them. But do not cancel all, they are important.
